A group of Cockroaches, Rats and Mice go in search of a new homeland for their fellow locals living in District Six, just above the city of Cape Town, South Africa. It is the early sixties and they are currently threatened with eviction as the entire area is earmarked for redevelopment. The local Cockroaches, members of a mysterious organization, hold the power of invisibility at will.

This proves to be invaluable to their quest. The main character, Ratrigues - a crotchety rodent of well above average IQ, joins an On Board party on a ship in Amsterdam. After passing out for obvious reasons, he awakens off the bulge of Africa, well on his way to Cape Town.On arrival, he roams the streets of Cape Town and meets the other main characters at their local hang-out - The Rat & Roach - in District Six while searching for an amply supplied alcoholic oasis. After some heavy interrogation by the locals he is invited to join a team of assorted vermin as they travel throughout South Africa, looking for a suitable place to re-establish their communitys roots.Their peregrinations bring them into contact with numerous other species.

They befriend them all, often defying the ingrained workings of the natural food chain. If I tell you any more, you wont have to read the book!
