He was born with an incurable disease: a serious love of horses, or “horsey daft” as the British put it.

John spent his life working with his father on the farm until his father retired in the late ’60s and John went into partnership with his brother, Don.The ’60s saw the disappearance of workhorses from farms as tractors came in to pull and power the machinery.

In 1974, after his father’s passing, John purchased his dream horse: a registered American Quarter Horse mare. John did not have much knowledge about horses at this point and his dream turned expensive and disappointing. However, he soon learned that the largest problem with horses was lameness caused by poor farrier work, which added to the development of laminitis and navicular problems.

After years of research and observation he found that, although these problems are incurable, they can be controlled so that the horse can have a happy and freely moving life.
