Matthies, whose approach to writing procedure manuals overcame many of the weaknesses of other methods.

Based on the concept that a procedure is like a stage play with the action moving from one person to another in strict time sequence, Matthies called his approach Playscript. Each procedure is written like the script of a play showing each of the actors and the actions they perform in time sequence.Manuals continue to be a headache for administrators. It is very rare to find manuals that are actually used, and even rarer to find ones that are up to date.

Much of this results from their complexity. Playscript procedures are written in the language of the end users and document the practical step-by-step issues that users face when carrying out their tasks. The main thrust of the Playscript method is to cull policy and general descriptive material, leaving behind the step-by-step detail of how to carry out the procedure. It spells out how an activity flows from one person to the next and how to work in a coordinated team basis.Practical Playscript was originally written as a training manual for the course in Playscript taught by the author.

The book explains in depth how to structure procedures, whether they be for a single person or for multiple people working in a team. It also covers the finer detail of how to handle complex routing where decisions have to be made that can branch into various sub-routines.  For the person new to procedures analysis, it has background chapters dealing with the functions and content of manuals, writing style and the writing cycle. The chapter on Writing Cycle discusses how to convert existing procedures into Playscript, how to write procedures for a new system and how to document current unwritten procedures.  The final chapter discusses how to implement Playscript in an organization, including manual production and maintenance.
